COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, Ms Brown will teach you how to treat strength and power deficits in the geriatric client.  If you are interested in learning efficient, effective targeted strength training interventions with your geriatric clients to achieve maximal function, this course is for you. Clinical practice and research is validating the practice of utilizing higher intensity strength and power training with even the frail elderly.

Physical and Occupational Therapists and Assistants are uniquely positioned to have a tremendous impact on the quality of life and independence levels of the elderly through optimal strength training interventions. While strength loss is a natural result of the aging process, research and clinical practice is presenting overwhelming evidence that changes in the aging musculoskeletal system are modifiable with strength training. Maximizing strength and functional mobility in the elderly is vital for functional independence. In addition, you will learn to identify those at greatest risk for functional decline and explore ways to initiate preventative strength training interventions to delay the onset of mobility deficits and falls that are often the precursors to institutional care.

Using minimal equipment, Ms. Brown will provide course participants with the theory and tools to examine and treat strength deficits in the healthy and chronically ill elderly client in the skilled nursing facility, ALF, and home environments. Participants will learn the indications, contraindications, and limitations of implementing a high intensity strength training program and learn techniques to introduce power training into the rehabilitation prescription.
