The National Provider Identifier is a 10 digit numeric identifier that will be a requirement for all individual health care providers who meet the definition of a "covered entity" under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), beginning May 23, 2007.  CMS has stated that use of the NPI will reduce costs and improve efficiency.  If you work in a group practice, the group as well as individual physical therapists must apply for the NPI.  If you are employed by a SNF or hospital, obtaining an NPI is not mandatory, but may be required by your employer.  The APTA recommendes that ALL PT's and PTA's obtain the NPI regardless of your practice setting. The deadline to apply has been extended. To apply online (a 20-30 minute process) go to: http://NPPES.cms.hhs.gov. To request a paper application, call 1-800-465-3203. Information on the new claim forms for use after May 23, 2007, is available at: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/ElectronicBillingEDITrans/15_1450.asp#TopOfPage.

Early in my career, I just didn’t get the importance of the American Physical Therapy Association.  It seemed like a lot of money to spend for a monthly journal.  But, after I became involved in leadership and had the opportunity to see for myself the amazing work of the APTA, I became a believer.  Without the APTA, our profession would not be where it is today.  Becoming an active member in our association has truly enhanced my experience as a physical therapist.  If you are not already, consider becoming a member.  It will provide you with great opportunities to network and dialogue with other physical therapist and assistants and be a part of an organization that is working to make this profession the best that it can be.  There is an IAPTA chapter business meeting on Saturday, April 28th 5:15 to 6:45 pm at: Rehab Authority Clinic, 5418 N. Eagle Rd, St. 140, Eagle, ID  83713. (East side of Eagle Rd between McMillan and Chinden) See you there!
